A National League Hockey Club, part of Holcombeians Sports Club

Y1 Championship

The Y1 Championship takes place for the first time at Surbiton Hockey Club this August bank holiday weekend, with tickets still available from £14 for adults and £10 for children. Both Holcombe’s men’s and women’s first teams are in action – including a number of our new signings.

Tom Carson, Y1 Hockey co-founder, says “our mission is to increase the exposure of club hockey in the UK”, with the tournament taking place shortly before the start of the Men’s and Vitality Women’s Premier Division 2022/23 seasons (weekend of 24th September).

A number of England’s Commonwealth Games squad will be in action over the weekend including Holcombe trio Phil Roper, Ollie Payne and tournament top-scorer Nick Bandurak.

The tournament places a heavy focus on both the hockey on the pitch and festival atmosphere off it.

Games will be slightly shorter at 10 minutes per quarter (women’s) and 12.5 minutes per quarter (men’s), with each team in the men’s and women’s tournament playing at least four matches over the weekend.

There is also a power play rule that teams can activate once per match whereby any goal scored in a given five-minute period counts as two, adding even more jeopardy with prize money on the line.

In the junior tournament, shootouts will replace penalty corners too.

There will be a £100 Y1 voucher for the top scorer, goalkeeper of the tournament and player of the tournament as well as £2,500 each for the winner of the men’s and women’s tournament.

For the junior finals, each member of the winning teams will be provided with a top-of-the-range stick from Y1 Hockey.

Saturday’s action starts at 11am with a 9am start on Sunday, followed by an afterparty until around 10pm with DJs.

On top of the afterparty for both players and spectators, there will be numerous food vendors and a mobile bar.

If you can’t attend, there will also be a huge range of coverage on social media and YouTube. Galvanised Hockey will be running streams on Y1’s YouTube channel with four camera angles on pitch one and one on pitch two for Sunday’s finals, while Y1’s socials will provide immersive content including warm-ups and team talks.

The streams will also include replays while some games will have commentary from our Phil Roper and England and Great Britain international Brendan Creed, who host the ‘Lets Stick Together’ podcast with Dutch player Joep De Mol.

The aim is to make the Y1 Championship a yearly event in the hockey calendar with a festival atmosphere and great hockey on display – what better way to spend your bank holiday weekend!
