Tribute to Richard Russell

Richard Russell sadly passed away on 14 May 2026, aged 54.

Richard joined Rochester & Gillingham Hockey Club in the 1988/89 season alongside his schoolmates Richard Cottam, Mark Hatcher, Neil Sheridan and Spencer Wichall, initially playing in the 4th XI under Chris Beaney’s captaincy. A capable and committed player, Richard was known for his strong hand–eye coordination and his fondness for striking the ball with power—helped, in no small part, by his preference for particularly heavy sticks. He was also well remembered for his habit, when taking a 16-yard hit, of calling “wait on”—a curious borrowing from cricket, a game in which he was equally involved, captaining a Sunday XI at Hempstead. His love of cricket scoring nurtured a lifelong passion for data and statistics, earning him the affectionate nickname “Stato”.

Richard Russell

Alongside his playing career, Richard quickly became an integral figure behind the scenes. He captained the Men’s 5th XI in 1993/94 and the 4th XI in 1995/96, and served as Men’s Secretary during the 1994/95 season. However, it was in his role as Fixture Secretary that Richard would make his most lasting and significant contribution. He undertook this responsibility with exceptional diligence, precision, and pride, and in recognition of his efforts, he was awarded Clubman of the Year on several occasions.

Following the merger of Rochester & Gillingham with Holcombe in 2000, Richard continued his involvement with unwavering commitment. On the pitch, he was a stalwart of the 5th and 6th teams for over a decade before stepping away from playing due to work commitments. Off the pitch, his contribution only grew. Initially working alongside Bob Terry to organise fixtures, Richard assumed full responsibility for all men’s and women’s fixtures from the 2003/04 season onwards—a role he fulfilled for over 20 years.

Even after retiring from playing, Richard remained dedicated to the club, managing fixtures and maintaining detailed club records right up to this season. His meticulous attention to detail ensured not only the smooth running of countless matches, but also the preservation of the club’s history. Each week, goalscorer lists were updated without fail, and at the end of every season, captains received comprehensive statistical reports covering appearances, goals, and individual achievements.

Richard’s passion for hockey extended far beyond Holcombe. For many years, he was responsible for organising fixtures across Kent Hockey, a role he carried out with the same professionalism until the restructuring of the sport under South East Hockey.

More than anything, Richard will be remembered for his dedication, reliability, and quiet commitment. His work underpinned the success and organisation of the club for decades, and his presence was valued by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Richard is survived by his wife Sandra and his children, Harry, Lucy and Eddie. The thoughts and deepest sympathies of everyone at Holcombe Hockey Club are with them at this difficult time.

His passing leaves an immense void, and he will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever appreciated for everything he gave to the clubs he loved.
