John Field sadly passed away on the 27th July 2025, aged 88.
Dad began his hockey career with Frindsbury HC, when the club folded, he joined Templars HC (he was an old boy of Temple School) who played their games at Knights Place (all played on very bumpy grass in those days). He was a captain of the lower teams for many years and supported the development of many of our young players. He played as a full back and only managed one goal from a penalty stroke – the club made a special award to him for eventually finding the back of the net.
He was a great captain and was the perfect host at home matches and made many lifelong friends some of whom would become club mates when Templars, R&G and Old Holcs merged to form the Holcombe HC we know today (around 2000).
After retiring from playing, he took up umpiring which he continued for many years up to the age of 75.
When he eventually ‘hung up his whistle’, he could often be seen at the ‘wrinkly end’ of the Clubhouse cheering on his grandchildren who gave him immense joy and pride. When he could no longer attend because he was caring for my mum, I would send him updates of the scores throughout the day on Saturday.
He really loved the sport, our club, and will be greatly missed by many friends and club members.
His funeral is on the 5th September at Thamesview Crematorium at noon, all are welcome.
